Summary: 

Responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer lines. Installs, repairs, and maintains mechanical regulating and controlling devices, locates utilities, and cleans sewer lines and drains by performing the following duties. This position requires working outside. On-call duties are required.

Duties and Responsibilities: (includes the following)
  • Repairs water and sewer lines, disconnects service lines, installs and removes fire hydrants, and installs and repairs valves.*
  •  Maps and diagrams water and sewer laterals.*
  • Locates sewer manholes, clean-outs, and sewer mains.*
  • Locates curb stops and water mains.*
  • Completes electronic work order requests.*
  • Responsible for hauling sand, road base, trench spoils and general debris to and from locations within the district.*
  • Operates light and heavy equipment as assigned.*
  • Responsible for visually inspecting and testing machinery and equipment.*
  • Searches for water leaks in main lines, valves, and hydrants.*
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software and spreadsheet software.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Valid driver's license
  • CDL class B preferred.** 
    **Within six months of employment must have federal licenses and certifications to operate equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities:
  • Working knowledges of proper wastewater and drinking water systems
  • Working knowledge of light and some heavy equipment operating principles, practices, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precaution common to maintaining and repairing underground water and sewer lines
  • Working knowledge of minor equipment maintenance and repair functions
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of light and some heavy equipment
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand tools
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of the district boundaries and streets
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to work weekends and outside normal duty hours

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds more than 2/3 of the time and up to 100 points 1/3 of the time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work in high, precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, sewage, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
